The Project
Lucy Developments is a long-established and sustainability-focused housebuilder and developer, delivering a wide range of homes for market sale and affordable housing.
The Moorings project is the first of multiple planned sites and is part of Lucy’s vision to make TALO its preferred construction solution for ultra-low energy family homes.
This scheme is a canalside residential development in the village of Wilstone in Hertfordshire, which will provide nine ultra-low energy homes for market sale.
There will be a mix of three and four-bedroom terraced houses and two four-bedroom detached homes, all of which are designed to reflect the local vernacular whilst maximising views across the water.
The TALO Solution
Lucy Developments selected TALO’s advanced offsite timber superstructure system combined with its energy solutions to achieve a significantly higher level of energy performance and build quality than traditional housebuilding methods can typically deliver for the same cost.
The TALO superstructures are manufactured offsite using high-quality, slow-grown Nordic timber, protected through a fully dry fabrication and installation process – from forest to site. This approach eliminates moisture-related movement, improving air tightness, thermal performance and overall construction quality.
Each home at the Moorings will be delivered to site with a high level of insulation, triple glazing, internal plasterboarding and external finishes pre-installed.
The structures are being installed in several phases, and all homes will be watertight in just one week per phase. This enables earlier commencement of internal fitout and significantly improved programme certainty.
Whole House Energy Strategy
TALO’s integrated low carbon energy strategy has been specified alongside the superstructure. This includes a solar battery package to power hot water and electric underfloor heating, and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR).
This holistic approach minimises operational energy demand and will radically reduce running costs for homeowners.
By adopting the TALO system, Lucy Developments benefits from:
- Ultra-low energy homes that enhance sales value and market differentiation
- Shorter build programmes and reduced time to market
- Greater cost certainty and reduced risk
- Consistent, factory-controlled build quality.
Architectural Design
The homes at Moorings have been designed to respond to the canalside setting and local architecture. Materials specified include red and buff-coloured brickwork, dark-stained timber cladding and metal roofing, large windows and projecting bays. First-floor balconies maximise views across the canal, enhancing the overall appeal of the development.
This project demonstrates the design flexibility of TALO’s housing solutions, enabling developers to achieve site-specific architectural solutions as well as superior performance.
